Obituary for Ruth Lavina Hamilton

Ruth L. Hogrefe Hamilton was born April 14, 1923 to Henry and Anna Hogrefe in Cushing, Oklahoma.

Ruth was a member of the greatest generation and a lifelong resident of the Cushing area residing on the family farm for over seventy years.

In June 1943 Ruth went to Guthrie, Oklahoma and rode the train alone to California where she married the love of her life, Jack J. Hamilton. Few would know that they were married in Hollywood and rented a small house on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, a place made famous by movie stars and celebrities. While Jack served in the military during World War II Ruth also served her country as a “Rosie the Riveter” working for Lockheed installing the tail sections in B-52 Bombers.

Ruth was a homemaker and part time employee of Peter’s Department Store in Cushing. Her family always knew which Christmas presents were from Ruth because they were beautifully wrapped in the bright red paper traditionally used by Peter’s.

Ruth had many gifts among which she was a wonderful cook, seamstress and an expert quilter. She was known for her baking skills and among specialties were her chocolate pies and her M&M Cookies. Because she was raised and lived during difficult times in our country Ruth was very frugal carefully measuring out the M&Ms so there were exactly three on each cookie, no more and no less.

Among her interests was volunteering at her church and she had a strong desire to teach the younger ladies how to quilt. She loved working in her yard, taking care of her flowers and until she became ill she mowed her own yard. She was also deeply involved with a church founded by her German ancestors in Augsburg, Arkansas where she and her daughter Charlotte traveled many times for services and celebrations.

She eagerly looked forward to the annual girls trip to the arts and crafts show at Fin and Feather Lodge where all sorts of unusual attire was often worn and skits acted out. She loved traveling in her and Jack’s RV often spending months in south Texas during the winter.

She was never late for anything and perhaps one of Ruth’s most important gifts was that of her time. When her great granddaughter Brittney attended school in Cushing Ruth would pick her up each day. Class was out at 3:15 however Ruth could be seen sitting outside the school by 2 p.m.
Ruth had a strong quiet faith in God and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She read her Bible daily and shortly before she became ill she told her family that she had already read completely through the Bible that year, months ahead of schedule.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack Hamilton, son Gary Thomas (Tommy) Hamilton, a brother Ben Hogrefe and other family.

Ruth is survived by her daughter Charlotte Hamilton Andrews (Larry), granddaughters Kimberly Heyman and Kathy Hamilton Cartwright (Rick), grandson Stacy Hamilton, great granddaughters Brittney Heyman Wheaton (Mark), Shayla Hamilton, Jessika Hamilton, great grandson Tyler Littlebear and great-great grandchildren Heston N. Wheaton and Canaan Hamilton.

The family is especially thankful for the staff and employees of Faith Hospice including Tricia, Christy, Rochelle and Michael. We are additionally thankful for the loving family care given by Barbara, Lasonia, O, Corey and others of Integrity Senior Living who provided a home for Ruth during her final days with us.

Viewing will be Sunday from 1-4 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 402 East Broadway, Cushing, Oklahoma.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m. at the Big Creek Church of the Brethren, 101 N. Brethren Road, Cushing, Oklahoma.
