Obituary for Claudia Fay Gerfen

Claudia Lemons Gerfen, longtime former Cushing resident, died Tuesday, February 18, 2020 in Tulsa at the age of 90 years. Claudia was born at home in Cushing on August 6, 1929 to parents Asa Grant Lemons and Laura Purley Evans Lemons.
She attended Lincoln Grade School and then Cushing Schools, graduating from Cushing High School with the class of 1947.
She was united in marriage to Louis Gerfen on October 31, 1950 at American Lutheran Church (now Immanuel) of Avery, Oklahoma. To this union four children, Gail, Curtis, Bill and Paul, were born.
While in high school, she worked at Paramount, Western and Dunkin theaters. After graduating she was hired by Southwestern Bell. When the Cushing office closed, she transferred to the Bethany office where she retired in late 1984, returning to Cushing in 1985.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church from 1952 to 2009 where she served as council member and treasurer. For many years she placed flags on the graves of veteran's at the church cemetery. In 2009 she became a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in town.
Over the years, Claudia was a member of and held offices in several organizations in Cushing including the Gladiolus Garden Club and Historical Society. She was secretary of the Alumni Association for over twenty years and volunteered at the Cushing Hospital snack bar for many years.
She enjoyed spending time with her friends playing Bunco, cards games, going to events or having lunch. In late 2016, she moved to a senior independent living facility in Tulsa where she enjoyed many activities and new friends.
She is survived by her children, Gail Coovert Hawk and her husband Justin of Broken Arrow; Curtis Gerfen and wife Evan of Oklahoma City, Bill Gerfen of Oklahoma City and Paul Gerfen of Peoria, Arizona; one grandchild Austin Coovert, currently serving in the U. S. Navy; one sister Mattie Goss of Graham, Texas; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, one sister and several half brothers and sisters.
Her service will be held Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 2:00 in the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, with burial following at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
The family will greet friends on Monday from 3:30 until 5:30 in the Floyd Family Center, east of the Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer or to the Immanauel Lutheran Cemetery in her memory.
