Obituary for Linda S. Wasson

Linda Sue (Mangrum) Wasson was born September 20, 1940 in her family home in the country near Morris, OK to Bernie Robert and Lena (Clyma) Mangrum. She departed this life on June 26, 2019 at Mercy Hospital (stroke unit). Linda’s parents were farmers, ranchers, oil/gas producers, and cotton-gin operators. Linda graduated from Liberty Morris HS in 1958. When Linda was in 5th grade, she met Jim “Jomac” (an 8th grader) and eventually started dating him in college at Northeastern State University, where she attended for 3 years. James Jomac Wasson and Linda were married on Sept. 6, 1959. To this union, Larry and Tammy were born.
While living in Bethany, Linda was a Cub Scout den mother, home-room mother, President of PTA, Girl Scout leader, little league softball and basketball coach, and a Volunteer with the American Red Cross in Oklahoma County. She belonged to the Ladies Music Club of Oklahoma City. Linda was a Charter member of the Westlake Presbyterian Church. The family moved to Cushing in 1975. Linda stayed busy as the Girl Scout Area Cookie Chairwoman, Order of DeMolay mom, and Salvation Army Board member. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cushing for 42 years where she served in various offices in Presbyterian Women and was a ruling elder. Being socially and civically minded, she was an officer in Hypatia. Linda enjoyed her Thursdays as a Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer (Pink Lady) extraordinaire at Cushing Hospital – where she amassed over 10,000 volunteer hours in the snack bar and information desk. For many years, Linda was the Treasurer for the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a 20-year breast cancer survivor and served on the Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon committee. She also supported Jim in his military career by being in various organizations such as the Oklahoma National Guard Women’s Association (ONGWA).
In 1980, Linda began working part time as the Director of Community Education for Cushing Public Schools and returned to Oklahoma State to complete her degree. She graduated in 1983, after a 20-year hiatus raising children, and began working full time. Through her position, Linda arranged many computer classes, dog obedience classes, wood-working, welding, and “water babies” classes. Hundreds of babies and children learned to swim in their pool, including their grandson Dillon.
Linda wrote a grant with the Department of Libraries for the Cushing Literacy Council. Linda and Jim went through the Laubauch Literacy Tutor training in 1989 and began tutoring people that could not read or were functionally illiterate. In 1998, Linda collaborated with the Child Service Demonstration Center who wrote for a 21st Century Learning Center grant from the US Department of Education for Cushing Public Schools. This program provided after-school tutoring and programs for many latch-key children until Linda’s retirement in 2002.
In 2013, Jim and Linda along with their family formed the Wasson Family Foundation to help support various non-profit organizations and establish college scholarships for students from Cushing and Amber-Pocasset Schools.
In her spare time, Linda enjoyed playing bridge, reading, baking, crocheting, cheering on the OU Sooners, and traveling the world. In 2015, Jim and Linda decided to retire at Epworth Villa in OKC. They continued to enjoy musical entertainment, activities, plays and other events. They joined the Covenant Presbyterian Church. Linda spent her lifetime giving her time, talents, and resources so that others may benefit. She felt very blessed to be able to serve others and give back her gifts from God.
Linda was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Norma Dean Vincent and husband, Paul, and nephew, Skip, and sister Roena Woodard.
Linda is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jomac, her son, Larry Wasson and his wife Carla of Chickasha, OK, her daughter Tammy Wasson and her wife Mary Emmet of Cushing, OK, Grandsons, Dillon Wasson of Stillwater, OK, Logan and Landon Wasson of Chickasha, OK., and step-grandchildren Amanda and Andrew Emmet. She is also survived by one sister Iris Qualls, and her husband Clark of Haskell, OK, brother, Bernie C. “Sonny” Mangrum and wife Darlene of Morris, OK, and one sister-in-law, Sally Jordan and husband Keith of Houston, TX, plus numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Since Linda was an avid member of the Red-Hat Society, and loved to wear hats, the family feels it would be an incredible tribute for those attending the funeral to don their favorite hat in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to OMRF – Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or Cimarron Valley Humane Society.

A memorial service will be held at Epworth Villa Chapel at 14901 N. Penn in Oklahoma City on Friday July 5th at 10:00 am. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church, 301 E. Moses, Cushing, OK on Saturday, July 6th at 10:00 am. Interment will be held at 3:00 pm, Saturday in the Tahlequah City Cemetery.
